Blue light is a part of the visible light that can damage the retina if exposed for a long time. The scientist also found that blue light radiation from smartphone screen and computer screen can screw up the sleep patterns. While technology products are inevitable, the only thing that can we do is reduce the blue light on the monitor screen.
The primary color that every day we see is based on a combination of red, green, and blue which known as RGB color. As it names, the blue light comes from a blue color. The intensity of color can be adjusted using following steps.
Reduce blue light on Android smartphone
The preferable idea to lowing the blue light from damaging your eyes is using the apps. Several free apps below provides options to adjust the color temperature, dim, and brightness. They generally promise that their app capable to reduce the harm from the screen.
Twilight is my favorite app trim blue light even the lowest point, allowing you to customize the color temperature, intensity, and screen dim. It comes with scheduling option that automatically adjusts the exposure of light depending on the time. For example, during the day, the color temperature is set to be normal, but when the night is coming, it increasing the anti-blue light settings.
Once it activated, the color slowly becomes warm and the blue color dramatically reduced. Twilight also offering Pro version with more features, but for me, the basic option is still good enough to overcome.
Blue Light Filter
As it names, Blue Light Filter gives a simple configuration to set up the screen. It has a several color temperature mode, for instances, Night Shift, Candlelight, Dawn, Incandescent Lamp, and many more. Hence, you can pick the right customization based on the activity without worry it won’t’ match with the light condition.
The app also has Notification Bar as a shortcut to disable the anti-blue light temporarily, in case you going to watch videos, take some photos, or anything else which inherent in color accuracy. Just like Twilight, Blue Light Filter has been tagged as Editors’ Choice which means it’s one of the most recommended apps for the user.
Night Filter can monitor your activity related the eyes health. It will give a notification if you have been staring at the phone for a long time without a blue light filter. It also tracking eye habits with detailed daily health report. The app was simpler than Twilight and Blue Light Filter but has a reminder for the user to do some exercises after using the phone.
The app claimed that their screen settings can save the battery up to 15 percent of daily use. It sounds reasonable because of screen dim is naturally throttled down the brightness, and eventually, reduce power consumption.
Note: Activating blue light filter would affect the actual color of the screen. Turn off the app when you intend to record a video, take a photo, or capture the screenshot. Some of those apps capable of disabling the filter when selected app running. Check out the settings menu for further configuration.
Reduce blue light on computer
The most used software for filtering computer screen is Flux. The app is less than one megabyte and memory-friendly. It runs in the background that continuously monitors the time and picks the right color temperature automatically. I have used Flux for a couple of years, it helps me to maintain the vision health.
Flux is available for the wide operating system, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and iOS. Unlike Android apps, Flux doesn’t affect your computer screen when taking a screenshot or capture a photo from a tablet.
Night Light Windows 10
If you regularly update the Windows 10, at least for Creator Update version, you probably notice that Microsoft has been adding some menus on the Notification area. The Night Light is supposed to be a blue light filter tools for Windows 10 machine. It also can be scheduled or run autonomously based on the time situation.
The user is free to adjust the screen temperature from Settings menu. I previously covered about Night Light on this article. This feature does not influence the color when you taking a screenshot. Despite its simplicity, the Night Light only available for Windows 10 Creator Update. However, for Windows 7 or Windows 8 user still can get Flux with no costs. It’s lightweight and powerful enough, and I think comparable with the Night Light.
Use a monitor that supports blue light reduction
Monitor quality is getting better and better. Current technology brings vivid color and customizable filter for the monitor. But, the most important things is the ability to reduce the blue light. Luckily, major screen monitor manufacturers understand the demand and introducing eye-friendly display.
If you planned to buy a new monitor, consider the blue light reduction capability. The hardware-based filter commonly way better than software filtering because it designed by the engineering team behind the product to ensure the light configuration is matched with the monitor system.
In addition, flicker-free monitor surprisingly decreases the fatigue of eye though you have been staring at the monitor for hours. Unfortunately, this technology only available on BenQ’s monitor. The patent remains for this company and no other monitor brands offering flicker-free display. The BenQ Eye Care monitor widely exists on several applications, such as gaming, home, office, and professionals.
Using an anti-blue light screen protector
One aggressive approach is embedding blue light filter onto the phone or computer screen. It set the color temperature, brightness, and screen dim with fixed level, no matter what actual conditions have been. This option might be good for people that rarely using color-sensitive software and parents that won’t screen display hurt their children eyes.
I was discovering the price of the blue light screen protector and conclude it costs you between $10 to $40 (USD). Again, don’t use this kind of screen protector if you often watching videos, edit some photos, and other color-sensitive activity.
Wear the blue-light filter glasses
The anti-blue light glasses is a healthy-stylish choice, especially for folks that usually wearing glasses an almost entire day. There are numbers of glasses maker for blocking the blue light from the computer screen, but I can’t suggest a specific brand due to a variety of glasses company for each country.
Just come to the nearest optical shops and ask them about the blue light filter glasses. Also the availability of the prescription lens, it would help people that have a disorder of the eye.
Although you were installing apps to filtering the screen, adding a blue light filter screen protector, or purchasing a new monitor that helps you reduce the strain of eyes, it’s important to take a break during your heavy working. The medical scientist advice to use 20-20-20 rule, which encourages you to take a 20 seconds break after 20 minutes of working, and looking at the object that 20 feet away.
The Computer Vision Syndrome (CSV) is a symptoms experience after working with computer or phone. But, it just a temporary effect and will decline after you stopping from the previous eye-torture activity.
